Exchange attachment compression and management with Exchange store defragmentation
Exchange mailboxes can quickly get out of control. Even with quotas, users will consume all the space given them and then archive emails in PST files in their home directory using up more space. Even if disk space is cheap, the cost to back it up isn't. Copies of duplicate files in attachments consume precious time and space on incremental and full backups as well as Exchange log files.
ExchangeCompress® is a Microsoft Exchange server based application that attempts to address these problems. It has
five major user selectable functions which are:
- Clean up the deleted items and sent items folders
- Compress the attachments in all the mailboxes in a selected
store. The attachments are then stored in the email as industry standard zip
files.
- Strip the attachments from the email and store the attachment on
disk as a file in a either a shared network location or the user's home
directory. Duplicate files can be eliminated so a file that is the same can be shared among many e-mail attachments. This can be completely transparent to the user, who will still see the
attachment as normal. Outlook Web Access can be supported.
- Defragment the selected stores to make storage contiguous,
eliminating unused storage and reducing the database size.
- With the ExchangeCompress Analyze function, you can evaluate the impact of your selected actions before commiting your updates to the Exchange Store.
IT Management Issues
- E-mails are growing exponentially as users don't manage their e-mail
- Users will not manage their e-mail unless forced to by the use of quotas
